Agroecology and digitalisation

27 July 2022 - Agroecology as well as digitalisation have both been acknowledged as indispensable by the EU Commission in meeting the objectives of the Farm to Fork Strategy. The question arises if and under what conditions agroecology and digital technologies are compatible. Tisselli and Hilbeck (2022) have used the FAO’s 10 elements of agroecology as a framework to formulate 10 principles of “ICT4AE” – ICT for Agroecology. These principles and the example of the smartphone app Ugunduzi show how agroecology and digitalisation can be compatible. However, all depends on the way digital technologies are integrated into food and farming systems.

White paper: Semantic modelling of Plant Protection Products data

  • Arable

22 July 2022 - This work analyses the sustainability challenge that farmers face in their decision making process to select Plant Protection Products (PPP) supported by tools such as Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS). Sustainable management of mollusc culture

  • Aquaculture

29 June 2022 - The Terra&Acqua Laboratory of the University of Ferrara has developed the localisation and georeferenced mapping of nursery areas for veracious clams in lagoon zones. The data has been used as a decision support tool for their expansion. Then the lab. has setup a process for the recovery of the production waste by foreseeing the reuse of sea waste (shells of bivalve molluscs). The valorisation of the production waste has generated an improvement of the sediment texture quality of the seabed in favour of water body oxygenation, decreasing the effects of marine waters acidification and reducing the impacts of climate change.
