Synergy Days 2024 projects: modernAKIS

Synergy Days is designed to celebrate and showcase European research projects that are transforming the European agri-food sector. Who are they, and how are they using digital technology to innovate the sector? We spoke to modernAKIS to learn more about the project, its goals and journey.

About modernAKIS

The project’s main objective is to improve AKIS actors’ capacities to leverage individual, organizational and systemic resources needed for the transformation towards more coherent, effective, and efficient AKIS systems and the transition to a more sustainable management and use of natural resources in farming and forestry.

This is achieved by implementing initiatives geared towards fortifying the networks of key stakeholders within the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS). We establish national/international key actor-groups (Communities of practice and Cross-Country Communities of practice), aiming to cultivate essential competencies crucial for navigating the evolving landscape of the new Common Agricultural Policy.

What inspired the creation of your project?

The inspiration behind this project stems from the need to strengthen and help evolve Europe’s Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS). The project aims to provide a discussion platform for key AKISactors across Europe’s agricultural ecosystem, driving innovation and fostering collaboration. With the challenges of sustainable resource management in farming and forestry looming large, it became clear that a coordinated effort was needed to build AKIS capacities at individual, organizational, and systemic levels. This project is a response to the need for transformation towards more coherent, effective, and efficient AKIS systems that can support the transition to sustainable agricultural practices.

Can you share some of the key milestones or successes your project/EDIH has achieved to date?

The project has made significant strides in building a robust European network that has attracted more than 1,000 key AKIS actors, including AKIS Coordination Bodies across all EU Member States. The project has also successfully initiated capacity-building efforts, equipping these actors with the skills needed to foster long-term systemic change. Additionally, at least one Community of Practice has been established in each Member State, empowering participants to act as change agents in their communities. Moreover, the development of a comprehensive digital catalogue, featuring tools and methods, is underway to support knowledge flow and align AKIS activities with key policy objectives, including the Green Deal, Farm to Fork, and SDGs. Furthermore, the ModernAKIS learning modules and the AKISconnect platform are also very insightful outcomes from the project, offering valuable resources to enhance the effectiveness of these initiatives.

What innovative technologies or methods are you most excited about within your project?

The project is particularly excited about its multi-stakeholder capacity-building methodology. By integrating best practices and country-specific AKIS management knowledge, the project leverages a vast network of key actors to catalyse a shift towards a more resilient and future-ready agricultural management system. This approach not only fosters collaboration but also ensures that innovations are tailored to the unique needs and challenges of each region, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the European AKIS. Additionally, the Transformative AKIS Journey (TAJ) multi-actor method stands out as an innovative approach that could be implemented in many AKIS related projects and networks.

What advice would you give to other innovators looking to make an impact in the agricultural / food sector through digital technologies?

Engaging in multi-actor working groups is crucial for innovators aiming to make a meaningful impact in the agricultural and food sectors. These groups facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and the creation of a robust network of high-quality, committed actors. Such an ecosystem is essential for driving innovation and creating a space where impactful solutions can emerge. Building strong connections and fostering collaboration across diverse actor groups not only accelerates innovation but also ensures that new technologies are effectively integrated into existing systems, leading to sustainable and scalable impacts.

What is the added value of Synergy Days for your project?

Synergy Days plays an important role in advancing the project's goals by bringing together actors from across the digital and agricultural sectors. This event provides a unique platform to generate multi-actor synergies, fostering collaboration and innovation. The focus on digital transformation aligns perfectly with the project’s objectives of strengthening AKIS in Europe. By facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices, Synergy Days contribute to the development of a more connected, innovative, and sustainable agri-food sector, making it a valuable component of the project's success.
