Decentralised Trust in Agri-Food Supply Chains

Transparency and trust are crucial for well-performing and sustainable agri-food supply chains. Yet, in too many food supply-chains both are lacking.

Too often, digitisation of the agri-food sector is understood as the development of innovative and smart solutions for the production. However, at SmartAgriHubs, we also support and encourage the innovation and use of digital technologies for the supply chain! Read about the two successful pilot projects using Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) and blockchain by the Flagship Innovation Experiment 28.

Trace Labs, the developer of the blockchain protocol, and Original Trail, the open-source decentralized protocol, worked together with Perutnina Ptuj, the largest poultry producer in South-eastern Europe, to create a Decentralized Provenance application which helps provide certainty about food origins and animal welfare standards used to increase consumer trust this technology.

In the second Pilot Project, Trace Labs and Original Trail worked with the Agricultural Cooperative Šaleška Dolina (KZŠD) in Slovenia to develop an automated dairy payment solution. This application helps dairy supply chains optimize their payment processes by using trusted data.

The implemented solutions prove that effective and efficient blockchain solutions can be built on top of existing IT infrastructure. There was no need for costly rip-and-replace of existing IT infrastructure at any of the stakeholders in the respective value chains when implementing the solutions.
