Young people and rural areas

COVID-19 has forced many young EU farmers to find new ways to trade their products and has forced customers to find new ways to acquire them. Despite the restrictions, there has been a reconnection between rural and urban areas. This clearly illustrates how merging the passion of young farmers with smart solutions can be a key element to enhance the resilience of agri-food systems to twenty-first-century challenges.

The main challenge new generations of farmers must overcome is climate change and smart cutting-edge technology can play a crucial role in making agriculture more sustainable. In SmartAgriHubs, connections between farmers, SMEs and entrepreneurs have been established, with Digital Innovation Hubs at the heart of the communities. Since digitalisation and precision farming will have a strong role in the CAP reform, this event is an interesting opportunity to know how these may have a positive impact on young farming.

The event will be largely interactive, fostering debates with key representatives from different fields of the young agricultural sector and the European decision-makers. The preferred format of the sessions consists of short lectures followed by a panel debate, allowing plenty of time for audience interaction and discussion. The event will be divided into three different sessions each on a different topic but all dealing with the EU’s smart agricultural practices and young farmers.
